As people protest the building of a mosque near the site, I just can't help thinking that nothing should be built there ever again. Leave it bare and scarred like a wound nobody bothered to treat - which is exactly what it is and has been since those buildings collapsed.
Obviously we're too fucking stupid as a country to agree on any proper symbolism for what happened, so just leave it alone. Let it symbolize exactly what it is - a widening chasm between principles and unhinged and ready-to-exploit emotion. The ideals expressed in the First Amendment clearly can't compete with pants-shitting opportunists that have used 9/11 as an excuse for deepening their own religious intolerance or political influence. So just leave the hole there.
It's a perfect monument to this country being tipped back into the 11th century and I am sure Osama is proud of the blood & pain still gushing from it.
Watching President Obama backtrack from his words supporting the mosque reminds me why only fools fucking bother to vote anymore. Going from chickenshit in Bush to chickenshit in Obama is about as inspiring as chickenshit ever gets.
