I could have screamed when I turned on CNN's Situation Room at 3:00 this afternoon.
The top story; O.J. Simpson involved in an armed robbery.
My feelings about O.J. were perfectly summarized years ago in an ad for Comedy Central showing a baby in a crib crying because there was a mobile over his head he couldn't yank down displaying pictures of Marsha Clark, Johnny Cochran, Lance Ito, Mark Furhman and O.J.'s darkened mugshot.
I know about these people because there was NO ESCAPING their images for what seemed like the entire 1990s. I learned about them against my will through some horrible group-psyche osmosis yet I stubbornly refused to give a shit - take away the overblown sensation of the "trial of the century" and all you had left was what Jules Feiffer acidly termed, little murders. It must have been an uneventful and trivial century if it was the defining trial.
Anyway, I don't want to go through that crap again. There's only so much I can stand not caring anything about another over-saturated national obsession.
Meanwhile, if the R.M.S. Titanic was afloat today, she apparently could travel the Northwest Passage soon in an even more glorious stroke of irony than the one for which she's famous.
Nothing to see here, folks, move along...
