I suppose anyone who remembers pop singer George Michael's arrest in a public restroom years ago has already developed some semblance of an opinion on cruising in bathrooms. I didn't give it much thought at the time - the first time I saw the video for Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, I had a pretty good idea that I would not look to George Michael as any sort of role model exemplifying integrity. Not like, say, oh, a United States Senator anyway...
I initially felt the same general indifference to actor Paul Reubens' arrest in an adult theater back in the early 1990s. As the outrage from so-called moral people grew over Pee Wee, I quickly changed my mind though.
I suppose the power of the sexual persecutors born from the Scarlet Letter climaxed (pun intended) with the impeachment of Bill Clinton over Monica Lewinsky. Fortunately, it's difficult to give these sorry hypocrites much credibility anymore, content as they were to ignore the sexually predatory behaviour of their own Mark Foley until it bit them hard in the ass with exposure in the press prior to last year's mid-term elections.
Ah, but I've strayed from the topic of the secret world of public restrooms...
I assume the cop who busted Senator Craig was older than the Minnesota age of consent, so what the fuck is the problem here? Was the policeman's foot tapped in invitation by Senator Craig's penis, asshole, nipple or tongue? I believe it was shoe to shoe contact, right? I seem to be missing the lewdness of this proposition.
If fucking for free is not a crime (as opposed to fucking for money, of course - another purityrannical bone still stuck in the throat of modern society) then why is seeking other horny people to fuck a crime? Why not fill the jails with singles bars then?
I don't intend this as a defense of Senator Craig - I despise hypocrisy most of all, but there is something genuinely fucked up about consensual adults being targeted by the police with the blessings of our society.
I recognize the curious blend of anonymity and intimacy offered by public toilets. I have personally been solicited for cocaine in a bathroom before. I also once saw some fucking pervert "accidentally" expose himself to my young son. The obvious difference here is that these two instances were actual crimes.
Am I hopelessly naive here? Will a relaxed police presence really mean gauntlets of propositions from ugly old horny men to tiresomely wade through just to pee at McDonalds?

I knew a guy who actually cruised bathrooms looking to hook up. I asked him, "How do you make an offer, sitting in a stall, not even seeing the other guy, without getting beaten every once in a while?"
He said, "It's not direct. It's a dance."
I thought about that again with the shoe tapping part of the police report. It's a tap dance, I guess.
I agree that nothing illegal seemed to take place. Probably a decent lawyer could have gotten him out of the mess. I think he pleaded guilty because he was ashamed.
Poor son of a bitch.
And, just to agree with you more, our laws regulating sex and drugs are draconian and harmful. Bleh.
Also, good to see you plugged back in.
Great blog. I use to take my dog to a park in Athens GA. I noticed a couple of men disappearing into this area of woods that didn't seem to have a path. Both were of age, one was considerably older, and one walked about fifty feet ahead of the other. It got my attention, but I didn't think much of it. I later learned from a local cop at the bar I worked at that this was a known "male gay cruise" park and he used to entrap/arrest people there. He just thought it was so funny how he could was really "good" at catching men wanting to have consenting sex. It made me mad and sad and want to yell NWA lyrics.
