Could Have Been

Tonight, as George Bush tells America he wants to send 20,000 more soldiers to Iraq, just remember that this war never needed to happen in the first place.
Bush had a chance to be considered one of the great Presidents in recent times for forcing Saddam to allow weapons inspectors back into Iraq. He achieved a foreign policy triumph that could have been celebrated by an entire world eager to see a peaceful resolution, but that wasn't enough. Instead, Bush proved to the world that he never intended such a resolution and had only used the trappings of diplomacy as a formality when he changed the demands on Saddam.
I still wonder if people know that Saddam complied with the weapons inspections so thick was the froth of war fever back in 2003. That there were no weapons of mass destruction to find was actually used by the White House to further bolster all of the bullshit Bush was shoveling to justify his pet war.
Almost four years after he started this dumb fucking war, adding 20,000 more bodies to the cauldron is the best idea he can come up with???
In America, there is no tangible sacrifice on the homefront that I see shared. Other than yellow ribbons on SUVs, you'd never guess there was anything going on outside of all the mall parking lots.
We are sleepwalking through wartime.
Bush will probably get what he wants tonight & this little episode in American History can quickly become another tragic & forgotten footnote to what we all know is an inevitable outcome.
Why is it inevitable? Because there's still no reason to continue or expand this war other than to sustain a damnable lie. It all could have been so much different.
